I love being a private tour guide in Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world! And I am always eager to share some about our very own Harry Reid Airport (LAS). Not only is it a convenient gateway to all the wonders of this vibrant city, but it’s also the cheapest airport to travel to in the entire United States. Yes, you heard it right!
According to Financebuzz.com, an online Personal Finance website, our local airport boasts the lowest airfare costs in the country, with an average ticket price of just $264.24. And here’s the cherry on top: this remarkable feat has been achieved six out of the last seven years! So if you’re looking for affordability without compromising on your travel experience, LAS is the place to be.
You can see the entire article here, but here are the main points for us:
The Least Expensive Airports in the United States
Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) – Average airfare cost: $264.24
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) – Average airfare cost: $271.78
Orlando International Airport (MCO) – Average airfare cost: $273.35
Oakland International Airport (OAK) – Average airfare cost: $288.23
Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) – Average airfare cost: $303.05
Not too bad! For context, let’s compare this with the list of the most expensive US airports:
The Most Expensive Airports in the United States
Dulles International Airport (IAD) – Average airfare cost: $494.78
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) – Average airfare cost: $456.86
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) – Average airfare cost: $444.42 4 (tie). Portland International Airport (PDX) – Average airfare cost: $425.35 4 (tie). Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) – Average airfare cost: $425.35
You might be wondering, what’s the secret behind Harry Reid’s affordability? Some have speculated that Las Vegas casinos might be subsidizing the rates? No.
Or that the government is intentionally keeping the prices low to attract budget-conscious travelers. Nah. The truth is quite different.
If you explore Harry Reid Airport, you’ll notice these machines with flashy lights. Yes, you guessed it right! There are around 1,400 slot machines within the airport premises. Michael Gaughan, the owner of the South Point Hotel and Casino, has been running the gaming franchise at the airport for decades. It is reported that the airport receives a whopping $3 million per month as their share of the gaming revenue. Thank you, travelers!
While the airport is owned by the Clark County Commission and operated by the Clark County Department of Aviation, the gaming receipts play a significant role in covering a variety of expenses like security and luggage handling. This $3 million is a substantial contribution that the Commission doesn’t need to bill, and airlines don’t have to pay. Consequently, airlines can charge less for flights to and from Las Vegas and still maintain a healthy profit margin.
So, when you’re on your way back home, make sure to stop by your favorite slot machine at Harry Reid Airport. Slip in a $20 bill and make a last donation, ensuring a cheap plane ticket to Las Vegas on your next trip. It’s a win-win situation for everyone! And who knows? Maybe you’ll hit the big one!

Welcome to the dazzling city of Las Vegas, where excitement, entertainment and exceptional service await you at every turn. As you embark on your Vegas adventure, it’s essential to handle the world of tipping with finesse. In this survival guide, I’ll walk you through the dos and don’ts of tipping, ensuring you have a seamless and enjoyable experience in the entertainment capital of the world.
Understanding Tipping Culture in Las Vegas:
Bellboy taking baggage of guest from thee car to his room.
Las Vegas has a long history of tipping, and it’s deeply ingrained in the city’s culture. I came to Las Vegas for decades as a tourist before moving here as a teacher, retiring here and becoming a private tour guide. I have lived both as the tip giver and the tip receiver. I remain a generous tipper because I know the economics of the Las Vegas Service culture.
Tipping is not only expected but also a way to express gratitude for excellent service. Even more, most service workers have a very low wage (some far less than a standard minimum wage) because of the legal expectation that they will make up to half of their earnings from customer tips, or more.
Because of that, a generous tip can go a long way in making your experience memorable. Workers often give “special attention” to customers who tip early and generously.
Dos of Tipping in Las Vegas:
Hotel staff: From the bellhops who assist you with your luggage to the hardworking housekeeping staff, tipping is customary. Consider tipping $2 to $5 per bag for bellhops and leaving a daily tip of $3 to $5 for housekeeping. The person who hails a cab for you $2-$5.
Restaurant servers and bartenders: A standard practice is to tip 15% to 20% of the total bill before taxes. If you receive exceptional service, consider tipping more.
Casino dealers and slot attendants: It’s customary to tip dealers a small amount, $1-$2 a hand you win, especially if you’re winning. For slot attendants who assist with machine payouts, a 1-5% of the win as a token of appreciation is always appreciated.
Drink servers: when you are gambling most establishments will provide you with free drinks. It is customary to tip $1 each time a server brings you a drink. Want to receive exceptionally fast service? At your first request for a drink tip a bit more, $3 or $5. Then continue to tip $1 each time your server brings you another drink. You will always be first on her list to get served.
Recognizing exceptional service: When you receive outstanding service, don’t hesitate to show your appreciation with a more generous tip. It’s a great way to make someone’s day and create a positive impact.
Don’ts of Tipping in Las Vegas:
Avoid overlooking tipping opportunities: Keep an eye out for situations where tipping is expected, such as valet parking attendants. Neglecting these small gestures of appreciation might leave a negative impression.
Not understanding service charges: Some restaurants and venues automatically include “service” charges. Sometimes these charges go to the staff, oftentimes not. Many restaurants automatically factor in an 18% gratuity for groups. Before tipping, double-check your bill to avoid tipping twice unintentionally.
Handling subpar service: If you encounter subpar service, it’s important to address your concerns politely. Instead of withholding a tip entirely, consider a reduced tip to reflect the level of service received. One point on this for restaurant tipping – most tips are shared between the wait staff, drink runners, cooks and in some cases the dish washers.
Special Considerations for Tipping in Las Vegas:

Las Vegas offers a wide range of services beyond the typical hospitality industry. Here are a few additional tipping guidelines:
Taxi and rideshare drivers: It’s customary to tip taxi drivers 10% to 15% of the fare, while rideshare drivers appreciate tips via the app.
Entertainment venues: Tipping performers is not expected, but if you wish to show your appreciation, consider buying merchandise or leaving positive reviews. Drink servers at comedy clubs and similar venues normally expect a tip of 15-20% of show tickets plus any extra drinks you might order.
Spa and salon services: Tip your spa and salon service providers 15% to 20% of the total bill, just as you would with restaurant servers.
Tour guides and excursion providers: For guided tours and excursions, it’s customary to tip 10% to 20% of the tour cost, depending on the quality of service.
Take the Stress out of Tipping:
Tipping should be seen as an opportunity to spread goodwill and foster positive relationships. Consider the following tips:
Man holding leather wallet with one dollar inside
Budgeting for tips: Factor tipping into your overall trip budget to ensure you have enough cash on hand. A smart tactic is break some larger bills so you have a ready supply of $1 and $5 bills.
Going beyond monetary tips: A friendly smile, a heartfelt thank you, or a positive review can go a long way in showing appreciation.
Conclusion:
Congratulations! You are now equipped with the knowledge of the dos and don’ts of tipping in Las Vegas. By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your experience in Sin City is not only memorable but also respectful and appreciative of the hardworking individuals who provide exceptional service.
Remember, tipping is more than just giving a wage worker an important part of their income—it’s an opportunity to show gratitude and make someone’s day brighter. And besides – in a gaming town like Las Vegas – good karma is important! So don’t forget to spread some generosity along the way. It just might come around back to you!
Wishing you an incredible time filled with unforgettable experiences, fantastic service, and plenty of happy memories. Cheers to a successful tipping journey in the city that never sleeps!

I am a travel writer, a retired history teacher and now a private tour guide based out of Las Vegas, Nevada. I specialized in small, customized tours for people who want a truly memorable experience. Recently I was named the Best Local Tour Guide by the Las Vegas Visitor Guide 2023.
Welcome to the sparkling oasis of Las Vegas, where dreams come alive and fortunes are won. You might have heard that Las Vegas is an expensive city, but fear not! In this article, I’ll show you how to experience the excitement and glamour of Las Vegas without breaking the bank. Get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey filled with thrills, entertainment, and fantastic savings!
Before you hit the Strip:
A little planning can go a long way. First things first, research the best time to visit Las Vegas when prices tend to be more budget-friendly. Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of September to November and January to April. That’s when you can often find the cheapest prices.
Surprisingly, even during the hot summer months, you might snag some great deals. Just be mindful of avoiding major holidays if you’re aiming to save some bucks. Oh, and here’s a tip: starting your stay on Sundays can help you avoid the weekend crowds
Budget-Friendly Accommodations:
Staying in Las Vegas doesn’t have to drain your bank account. Explore hotels off the Strip for lower rates. You’d be surprised at the excellent options available just a short distance away. Keep an eye out for hotels that offer discounts or special deals.
Joining a hotel chain’s reward club before you come can save you loads of money. For example signing up for clubs like Caesars Rewards or Hilton Resorts can immediately open up cheaper hotel rates.
Better yet, if you find a dynamite price at an internet site for a hotel you want to stay, don’t book yet! Call the hotel directly and mention the special deal. More often than not, the hotel will match the online price and you will get better flexibility and hotel credit.
Saving on Food and Drinks:
Close up shot of a plate of vegetable egg benedict
Let’s talk about saving some dough on food and drinks in Las Vegas! We all know this city is famous for its fancy dining, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a delicious meal without going all out.
One trick is to check out the happy hour specials in hotels and casinos. They often serve up tasty bites and drinks at wallet-friendly prices.
And don’t overlook off-Strip opportunities. An example is Herbs and Rye, a world renowned steakhouse and Cocktail Lounge that has extended happy hours where not only drinks but main dishes are half price. A quality steak at half price? I’m in!
Also don’t overlook discount sites like Groupon and Vegas.com where you can find all kinds of amazing deals.
Free or Cheap Entertainment:
Las Vegas is a happening place, and guess what? You don’t have to break the bank to have a blast! There are loads of free attractions and shows waiting for you.
Las Vegas, USA – July 18, 2008: Las Vegas Bellagio Hotel Casino, featured with its world famous fountain show, at night with fountains in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Picture this: breathtaking fountain displays (Bellagio and Wynn) and jaw-dropping acrobatic performances that won’t cost you a dime (Circus Circus). Keep those peepers peeled for discounted show tickets available online or at ticket booths.
Oh, and if you’re craving a change of scenery from the casino scene, check out nature parks or museums that offer free or super affordable activities for everyone to enjoy. Fun doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag in Vegas! A couple of my favorites is the Mob Museum, Neon Museum and the Pinball Hall of Fame.
Transportation Tips:
Navigating Las Vegas doesn’t have to be a headache or a wallet-squeezer.
There are a number of free transportation options in Las Vegas:
First The Downtown Loop which runs a route from The Strat, to the World Market to Downtown Fremont Street.
To make it confusing there is also the Boring Company’s Vegas Loop which is currently a free, underground transit system that currently connects the different parts of the Las Vegas Convention Center and nearby locations, most notably Resorts World. This service is in early stages, with dreams of one day becoming a paid service system connecting the Downtown with the Strip, the airport and points south.
Finally for free are the three trams. One connects Treasure Island with the Mirage (soon to become Hard Rock Hotel). Another connects Bellagio with Crystal Shops, Aria and Park MGM. The final one connects Excalibur with Luxor and Mandalay Bay.
There are also some great cheap options. Check out the nifty Las Vegas Monorail or hop on the Deuce bus to get around with ease. Rideshare services and shared shuttles are also fantastic choices that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. And hey, for an extra fun twist, you can even rent a bike and pedal your way through the vibrant city. Getting around can be a breeze and a blast at the same time!
Take a Walking Tour:
mature couple sightseeing in downtown las vegas streets
I always advise people to take a walking tour early in your trip into a new city. What is not to like? Some great but gentle exercise after all your travels. You get to see the city in a way you just never would by just wandering around on your own.
Plus I have found most walking tour guides are a cut above the typical big bus tour guides in their local knowledge. You get to be with a local expert for one to two hours and pick their brain about all the best and worst places. AND such tours tend to be reasonably priced.
There are plenty of ways to save money during your Las Vegas adventure.
Avoid unnecessary resort fees as well as other semi-hidden fees by carefully reading hotel policies beforehand. Watch for discount coupons or promo codes for attractions and activities, which can be found in brochures, flyers or online.
Stay hydrated and save on overpriced drinks by bringing your own water bottle to quench your thirst as you explore. Meanwhile beat the horrid drink and snack prices of the resorts by loading up on water, liquor and snacks from businesses like Walgreens, CVS and ABC stores that are located all over the tourist corridors.
Safety and Security Considerations:
Remember to stay vigilant and be mindful of street vendors and potential scams targeting tourists. Keep your personal belongings secure as you explore the city. It’s always a good idea to follow general safety guidelines and stick to well-lit areas, especially when night falls, to ensure a worry-free and fabulous experience. Your safety is key, so let’s keep the glitz and glamour shining bright with peace of mind!
Gambling Responsibly:
Ah, the thrill of gambling in Las Vegas! It’s all part of the experience, but here’s the secret: setting a budget is key. Make sure you decide on a budget and stick to it. Now, here’s a pro tip: take advantage of player’s club or loyalty programs. They often come with extra perks and rewards that can enhance your gaming adventure. And hey, don’t shy away from lower-stakes games. They can still bring excitement without putting a strain on your wallet.
Oh, and keep an eye out for those free slot play offers. They’re a fun way to test your luck without spending a dime. Just remember, the ultimate goal is to have a blast and enjoy the lively atmosphere, not to empty your pockets. So, let’s embrace the thrill responsibly and savor every moment!
Las Vegas can be incredibly expensive, but with a little thought and savvy your vacation dollars can go a lot farther than you think. Have fun in Vegas!

The Hand of Faith is a famous gold nugget discovered in 1980 by Kevin Hillier with a metal detector near Kingower, a small town in Victoria, Australia. The nugget weighs 27.21 kilograms (60 pounds) and is the largest gold nugget ever found with a metal detector.
After its discovery, the Hand of Faith was sold several times before being purchased by the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1981 for over a million dollars. The casino’s owner, Steve Wynn, put the nugget on display in the lobby of the Golden Nugget for several years, where it became a popular tourist attraction.
In 2007, the Golden Nugget Casino was sold to Landry’s, Inc., a hospitality and entertainment company owned by businessman Tilman Fertitta. The Hand of Faith is still on display at the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas today, and visitors can see it for themselves in the casino’s Gold Tower lobby.
During my Fremont Street Downtown Walking tours we also stop by the Hand of Faith Golden Nugget. While you take your fill of pictures and selfies of 60 pounds of solid gold, I tell the fascinating story of how Kevin Hillier originally found the treasure.
